The idea for Betonica was conceived by Medical Herbalist Laura Carpenter after recognising the need for high quality and comprehensive professional training for medical herbalists in the UK. After writing course content and extensive structuring by Laura the first intake of students were welcomed onto the course in September 2016.

The following year in June 2017 saw a successful first Summer School, where students who already have some experience of herbal medicine are able to Fast Track on to the second year.

The first students to finish the Four Year Medical Herbalist Training Programme are due to graduate in June 2020.

In early 2019 Laura stepped back from her role to pursue other avenues of herbal work and the course became a Community Interest Company. The original board members were joined by Sebastian Pole, Iain Stewart and Pamela Spence.

The course continues to evolve in response to developments and research in herbal medicine as well as input from course tutors.
